The Changing Face of Childhood
This splendid illustrated book shows the development of children’s portraits in England in the 18th century and their further influence in Europe.
The portraits of English children in the 18th century, spending their time in the countryside without being supervised by adults, reflect a complete new view of childhood. Based on Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s texts, which were read all over Europe, children were seen as independent personalities for the first time, receiving the care and pride of the family.
The variety of the artists includes Anthonis van Dyck, who established a modern picture type with his children’s portraits in England, Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds, Henry Raeburn as well as Friedrich von Amerling and Franz Xaver Winterhalter.
