[On the Role of Theology in Public Ethical Discourse. An Analysis Based on the National Ethics Councils of Germany and Switzerland]
What role does theology play in contemporary public ethical discourse? What role can theology play? What role should theology play – and what role should theology not play? This study explores these questions based on the examples of the national ethics councils of Germany and Switzerland. Qualitative interviews with the councils’s representatives of theology and with selected non-theological members facilitate current and authentic insights into the role(s) of theological ethics in pluralistic societies. Four contemporary paradigmatic approaches on the relationship of theology and the public sphere serve as the theoretical frame of reference. The result reveals a christologically contoured Public Theology as the most compelling and viable approach.
