Under what conditions can we speak of an audio-visual connection in film, which treats sound and music not as an accidental but as an intrinsic element? This study is concerned with a seldom addressed aspect of the theory of film music, taking as its theme the filmic relationship between image and sound examined from a philosophical perspective. Using important theoretical sources on the aesthetics of film music as well as selected examples of films, the author develops a theoretical conception, originating from phenomenology and the film philosophy of Gilles Deleuze, which takes the principles of the use of sound and music in film back to their fundamental aesthetic structures.
