The recent polemics against the Enlightenment and attempts to update it pose challenges that an engaged, fact-based field of Enlightenment studies has to face up to. For it is only when the various concepts and positions of the Enlightenment, and the ideas associated with them, are brought to the fore that it is possible to discuss their relevance and validity in relation to the issues of the present.
